ich hab mit einem biker abgerechnet. was ja einerseits schad ist, denn er schrieb und reagierte gut.
aber es tat so gut, einmal einem von diesen leuten meine abscheu auszudrücken, die ich empfinde, wann immer ich so einen lärmenden auf seiner krachn seh. die tun das um der sache selbst willen, nicht etwa, um sich von einem ort zum anderen zu bewegen.
es war ungerecht von mir - aber es musste raus, und es tat gut: zumindest in EINEM von denen das bewusstsein zu wecken, wie man die sache AUCH sehen kann. und wie man die sache AUCH HÖREN kann.

PS matrix: derzeit hab ich sie alle wieder geknackt: es gibt ein bild in 'matrix', in dem er, der auserwählte NEO, alle geschossenen patronen mit einer hand aufhält, eine imaginäre energiemauer. so kommt es mir derzeit mit den ONLEINs und den WEBSIs vor. nachdem der neujahrsspaziergang eine niete war (mich also in den wind schoss), hab ich wieder mal so ÜBERHAUPT keine lust, einen mir fremden menschen zu treffen. dennoch bleiben die annoncen aufrecht.
jedenfalls pflückt NEO dann besinnlich die patronen aus der energiemauer, sieht sie an, und dann fallen sie alle runter, an dieser mauer.

After the dramatic opening scene, Neo is sleeping in front of his computer. He is woken by the mysterious words flashing on the monitor screen: "Wake up, Neo." This is clever symbolism. Although Neo is sleeping in the mundane sense, he is also sleeping in the spiritual sense. The entire movie is packed full of these sorts of layers of meaning. Shortly after waking, Neo is told by another hacker, "You're my saviour, man, my own personal Jesus Christ." And so his true identity is actually revealed early on in the movie, not just at the end with his resurection. But Neo is not the Christ of Christian orthodoxy, but rather of the Gnostic variety.

The next morning, Neo goes to work, where his real name is Thomas Anderson. Thomas is a name that appears often in Christian scripture, particularly Gnostic Christian. Anderson is a combination of the Greek andras, meaning "man", and son - so literally "son of man". Son of man is a Biblical term for humans, so in the mundane world, Neo is Thomas the human. He spiritual self is, of course, Neo. This probably represents his soul. Neo is also an anagram for "one", which later is revealed as his true identity. This probably represents spirit.

Later on, Neo is told by Morpheus (isn't Morpheus a Greek god of illusion?) that the world he thinks is real is actually a creation of an AI. Not much is said about this AI, except that it is "a singular consciousness that spawned an entire race of machines". This "singular consciousness" is is representation of the demiurge and the matrix itself is the illusion that we have to face. In Gnosticism, the world is not an illusion as such, but rather the illusion is our false conception of it. However, The Matrix also draws from other religions, so it may take this part from the maya of Hinduism and the impermanent reality of Buddhism. This view is reinforced by the kid in the oracle's waiting room who, after doing his spoon-bending trick, tells Neo that it is not the spoon that bends, but his mind.

The archons are the servants of the demiurge. They are the more directrly active conspirators. In The Matrix, they are the agents. They jealously seek to deny Neo his spiritual freedom and a glimpse into their psychology can be derived from the fact that they insist on calling Neo by his mundane name of Mr. Anderson. Their own ignorance means they cannot, and will not, see who he really is.

Zion represents the Gnostic heaven, the true home of spirits. The crew of the Nebuchadnezzar are bodhisattva-type figures, who instead of just returning to Zion, stay behind to help the rest of humanity. Neo is also like this, only he goes one step further, becomming like Buddha himself rather than just a run-of-the-mill(!) bodhisttvva. Just as the Biblical Jesus is killed by the Romans (servants of the demiurge) and then resurects in the tomb, Neo is killed by the agents (servants of the AI) and comes back to life in front of their very eyes, confirming his status as the one. (The dying as resurecting god-man is actually a common archetype in mythology. It is present in the Osiris ledgend as well as other religions.) He then enters agent Smith and splits him apart with pure luminosity - the light dispelling the darkness.

There is so much more symbolism in the movie, such as the Bible reference in the Nebuchadnezzar. In fact I read a book about Bible archeology recently that talked about the historical Nebuchadnezzar. Apparently he was a Babylonian emporer who had some victory against the Jews. There is the name Trinity, the character who probably represents Mary Magdalene. Cypher representing Judas. Even the "lady in red" represents the distractions of the mundane - Mouser gets killed while he is stearing at a photo of her. It seems endless.

Anyway, enough waffling for now. I'm starting to get carried away. I'm sure some of you have spotted lots more things in the movie. Care to share any? I know the writers drew heavily on Buddhist and Hindu ideas, but they don't come accross as strong to me. I wonder if that's because there are not as many or I'm just not so attuned to them? And are there any specifically Taoist themes? - by monty
